Teaching classes on Skillshare might be a nice way to use your skills.

Steven Goldman replied to the topic Who Here Has an MPA? in the forum Career Advancement 8 years, 3 months ago

I have an MPAff from UT-Austin; I think the big takeaway career offices should be offering is if you have imagination, you can apply the degree and skills in a wide variety of places:
–freelance analyst for energy consulting practice
    –communications consultant for startup nonprofit
–postgrad fellow at one government agency
    –researcher/analyst…[Read more]

DC’s less rude, more PC/elitist/anal. Miami’s definitely a rude/raw city (having grown up there and don’t plan on moving back). NYC isn’t rude if you live there; it’s just unapologetic. Tourists tend to find it rude, and that’s probably b/c they don’t talk to strangers.

Allison: For restaurants, hop over to Washingtonian.com and look at their Cheap Eats directory; it’s sortable by neighborhood and has a lot of great and inexpensive places.

Steven: Just saw your panel proposal on FB’s SXSW PanelPimper… looks like a great topic!

Steven Goldman replied to the topic What was your wedding song for the 1st dance? in the forum Music Sharing 9 years, 8 months ago

It’s a tough thing to pick: we ended up going with an R.E.M. song we both liked. We’re not great dancers, so we wanted something that wouldn’t be too complicated to dance to, but wouldn’t be too cliche either.

(Her brother had a funny moment with his and his wife’s first dance: the band put the tape with the song in on the wrong side, so…[Read more]

Steven Goldman replied to the topic Govies in the Movies: Who’s Your Favorite Actor/Actress Portraying a Govie? in the forum Gov TV and Movie Junkies 9 years, 9 months ago

Warren Beatty played a great (if satirical) Senator in Bulworth. Also, The West Wing had quite a few excellent actors playing government employees across its seven seasons, as did The Wire.

Breaking Bad and Mad Men are both DAMN good television.

Guilty pleasures (though also good): Fringe, Glee, formulaic USA Network shows (Burn Notice, Royal Pains)

    Mark:

Any good examples of training venues on the tactical level, especially for communications practitioners from non PR/advertising/marketing educational backgrounds (i.e., someone who hasn’t studied ICM)?

It’s not *our* government, per se, but Party Animals was a great UK show about the day-to-day of British politics.

Steven Goldman replied to the topic Is it Social if the comments are turned “off” in the forum Communication Best Practices 10 years, 5 months ago

It’s less social, certainly, but that doesn’t stop people from spreading your messages and content. However, it won’t feel as transparent to the user (i.e., without the ability to leave feedback, they may be less inclined to spread your content for you, so they’ll just read it, shrug and leave the site). Your staff would have have to spend time…[Read more]

Steven Goldman replied to the topic How does your agency determine “official press” when it comes to social media? in the forum Communication Best Practices 10 years, 5 months ago

4b – Is recognition necessarily about hit rate/page views, or are there other qualifiers, like professional associations, previous publications (i.e., do they blog but also write/have written for larger print/Web publications), or personal qualifications?

Steven Goldman replied to the topic True Story…Relationships matter at all levels. in the forum Leadership, Management, Supervision 10 years, 5 months ago

I’d add to Danielle’s comment and argue that the moral of the story is not just decency… it’s about engagement, being actively interested/involved in the world around us. Empathy helps one to put oneself in others’ shoes, so that when we do anything, from asking for data to implementing a program to ordering dinner, we consider the people we…[Read more]

    Trisha:

I just found this discussion, so I’m pretty late to the party, but…

There was a lot of discussion at SXSW Interactive this year about incorporating location-based games into advocacy and messaging, particularly using social networks like Foursquare and Gowalla, where you go places, “check in” using a mobile app, and have different…[Read more]

Sandy: why a math minor? Why not a set of coursework in economics, finance or statistics to give you an analytical grounding? Business finance or public finance classes would help with budget planning/management.
