When the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (NY) introduced Select Bus Service in the Bronx and Manhattan, the agency implemented off-board fare payment to speed up service. Passengers swipe a MetroCard through a vending machine at the bus stop and receive a ticket as proof of payment. But NY1 reports that some riders are encountering broken ticket machines and receiving $100 tickets for fare evasion even though they have valid MetroCards. “They treated you like you were a common criminal, like you were purposely trying to beat a fare, when you’re not. Especially when you have your MetroCard out,” said one rider. MTA officials said that the ticket machines work at least 90% of the time and passengers who believe they received a ticket in error may appeal the summons at a hearing. Link to full story in NY1.
