Don’t wait to get promoted, promote yourself

Quote: “If you are willing to do more than you are paid to do, eventually you will be paid to do more than you do.” – Anonymous

I’m sure most of your co-workers only do the work that is asked of them, nothing more, and nothing less. What about you?

Well, if you want to be paid more and promoted faster, then you have to do the opposite of what everyone else is doing or not doing in this case. Your job should you choose to accept it is to keep asking for more work, you read it correctly, yes, keep asking for more work. And when you ask for it and you get it, do it quickly and efficiently. Why?

Because you want to develop a reputation for being the go-to person whenever something needs to be done. In our federal careers, our reputations go a long way. If people come to know you as a worker bee, you will most definitely be promoted. In fact, did you know that you promote yourself every time you take on new responsibility? Yes, you do. So go that extra mile.

When you go the extra mile and give more than is expected, you are more likely to receive a promotion when it becomes available. A side benefit is that you will feel more satisfied at the end of each day knowing you have given your very best.

Just think of what you could accomplish if you were willing to ask for more work and then going the extra mile by delivering excellent, unparalleled service? Are there circumstances in your work life right now where you could do more, provide better value, over deliver, or improve on what is asked of you? If so, then as the Nike saying goes, just do it!

Action Item: Today go and ask your employer for more work.

Excellent message, Meiko, thank you — just the inspiration I needed today to get up off my duff and reach out so I’ll feel good when I go home today, instead of feeling dull.
