Live Blogging the 2011 Next Generation of Government Summit: Luncheon Keynote (Day 1)

12:50 p.m. Talk is over. Q and A time. Thanks for reading.

12:30 p.m. More from Patrick:

Digital Government: Social media and civic engagement. E/M/T commerce. Shared/consolidated services. Apps (See/click/fix). Entrepreneurial. “Are you a climber or a coaster?” The one word you should know going forward: Synchronicity. What we’re doing here.

Your Career Brand: Have a leadership playbook. Who are you reading? (Choose non-government publications.) Take advantage of networking, job shadowing, mentoring, training. Be outcomes-oriented. “I think people need an expiration date on their opinions.” Your access to key decision makers is limited. Good writing skills will get you there. Participate on blogs, explore the arts, write things down, bring in guest speakers, etc. Innovate!

Career Marketing: Take an action photo. Upload it. Read “30 Under 30” and “Pulling off the Ultimate Career Makerover.” Think till it hurts. Go to a Thinkers and Drinkers event. Change your photo. Etc. “There’s nothing worse than being in a bad relationship or a bad job because of a bad fit.”

12:10 p.m. In just a moment, Patrick Ibarra of the Mejorando Group will be presenting our luncheon talk: “Digital Government: Me, My Career and My Future.”

Patrick: Most speakers give their perceptions of reality. My job is to help you find yours. “If you ever hear yourself saying, ‘We’ve always done it that way,’ you should immediately go to adult recess… which is happy hour.”

“Today isn’t about me. It’s about you.”

It scares managers to not be able to turn to conventional wisdom. People talk about thinking outside the box. Guess what? There is no box. You don’t want to rock the boat? “Baby, the boat is rocking.”

Right now is the time to be bold, brash, and raise your productivity. You are your brand. Your generation are knowledge free agents. You lease your talents for the time needed to do a job.

Government is fundamentally changing. Forever.
