Amazon Web Services and NASA have embarked on a project to provide the public access to the space agency’s satellite information on climate and the Earth sciences.
The collection of NASA research data will be made available for researchers and educational organizations through the AWS cloud platform, NASA said Tuesday.
AWS and the space agency to elevate the U.S.’ geoscience industry via community-driven research and innovation, with data services to include access to global change datasets and the NASA Earth Exchange.
NEX is intended to help citizens leverage the data processing tool’s supercomputing, Earth system modeling, workflow management and NASA remote-sensing data tools.
“NASA continues to support and provide open public access to research data, and this collaboration is entirely consistent with that objective,” NASA Chief Scientist Ellen Stofan said at the agency’s headquarters in Washington.
“Earth science research is important to every person on the planet, and we welcome contributions from all researchers in improving our understanding of Earth and its climate,” he added.
Datasets will include NEX downscaled climate simulations, those collated by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer instrument on NASA’s Terra and Aqua satellites, and Landsat records from the U.S. Geological Survey.
