The Federal Coach: What do leaders owe their agency?

Q: In follow-up to your column on Monday, how do you keep LeBron if your culture does not support him? How does the federal government change its managerial style in order to keep the high-performers within Gen Y?

A: The federal government certainly has some work to do to support and engage high-performers. While it’s easy to blame the “system,” it’s ultimately an agency’s individual leaders who determine the culture. Some agencies and offices have been successful at snagging top talent and keeping it — Katharine Gebbie at NIST immediately comes to mind. If you are interested in retaining your best employees – no matter what generation they represent -motivating, developing and letting those individuals shine is the key.
