@towerbridge – Heavyhanded Twitter

One of GreenCityStreets’ main goals is using new technologies to help improve urban transport and urban planning in general. An important part of this effort is helping educate people about what really goes on in cities. With better understanding we hope people can help identify and even implement ideas that can improve their cities.

A very creative effort by London Artist Tom Armitage was underway using twitter to broadcast information from the Tower Bridge in London. Unfortunately, the powers at Twitter decided that this Twitter account should be taken away and given to the commercial enterprise running the London Tower Bridge tourist attraction.

Twitter has acted in a heavy-handed manner which calls into question whether we can depend on the application to help further non-commercial goals such as improving cities and citizen-based communications. Please contact twitter and urge them to give the @towerbridge account back!
