@3uyrh5yp6oi5kSorry just spotted this! I’m originally from Tennessee, but I’ve spent pretty much my whole adult life in the UK – certainly my adult working life.

Hi all, I’m doing a presentation on the 10th of december around social media use in local government. The people I’m presenting with suggested a Christmas theme – so I’m intending to cheese it out as much as possible – and Kris Kringle it up all the way. But it would be really great if you can provide some examples of social media use by local…[Read more]

Ingrid Koehler replied to the topic Asking for the Job at the End of the Interview: Too Forward? in the forum Career Advancement 10 years, 1 month ago
I have never heard that before. I would certainly express in an interview how much I wanted the job, but I’ve never said “So can I have this job?” (But I work in the public sector in the UK – so I know they would never be able to say – “yep, here you go” because there’s a process that I’ve been on the other end of, too). I also try to use language…[Read more]

In England, we’re lucky to have some central bodies that support local government – we’ve just established a transparency programme across the Local Government Association group bodies LGA, LG Improvement and ESD-toolkit and also with key professional bodies SOCITM (IT managers) and CIPFA (accountancy) ahead of the requirement for all local…[Read more]

My favorite college memory was of leaving my car illegally parked in a Faculty lot at the University of Tennessee – I’d gone up to do some work in Geology lab at night and then went off to the library forgetting I’d driven. Not just a ticketable but a TOWING offense. But President George Bush (the elder) was speaking on campus the following day…[Read more]

There’s lots of really great stuff happening in Birmingham UK – We recently ran an event for local gov policy leads across England – (argghh – really annoying you can’t just drop links into the comments) – round up of the full event here, http://ideaperformance.com/2009/07/27/round-up-of-performance-to-trust-strengthening-accountability/ – but the…[Read more]

Thanks for the comment – I’ve been up in a no-electricity, no signal lodge up in Scotland – just picked it up. You may also want to have a look at http://www.civicsurf.org.uk which has some blog specific guidance.

HI all,
I wonder if anyone has developed or is aware of any specific advice or guidance on locally elected officials or state reps. I’m working on some guidance for councillors in the UK and would love to check against anything written for the US.
You can check out the draft guidance here: http://www.ideasocial.wetpaint.com developed in a wiki.

This may not be exactly what you’re looking for, but here in England my employers the Improvement and Development Agency (for local government) are hosting an online conference on social media in local government next week (6-8 April). Local governments in the UK have a variety of responsibilities that cross over some state and local remits in the…[Read more]

The LGA group (Local Government Association for English local authorities) is set to launch a new service (8 April) that will help councillors to use social media to keep in touch with local residents.
Tweety Hall is the latest online development that will help voters track what their local councillor is doing online. You can find out more about…[Read more]

I think the Canadian Green party drafted its party platform using a wiki. There have been a couple of examples of some departments in the UK using wikis for consultation. These are just off the top of my head…

In the UK, at Barnet Council (one of the London boroughs) the Leader of the Council (party leader of the ruling political group), does regular sessions in different parts of the borough and then that content (video and/or transcript) is posted here: http://leaderlistens.com/ Folks who were or weren’t in attendance can contribute to the…[Read more]

@0mmwbmw78h546I haven’t traditionally worked on customer service issues, but I did just manage the research and publication of Insight: Understanding your citizens, customers and communities which is an overview of some of the current practice in local government in England.
