Acquisition and Millennials — A Perfect Match?

Millennials — they are often motivated, pushy, impatient and innovative — they want change and they want it now. So it seems like they would be a perfect fit for the acquisition community.

But there’s a problem. Not many young people are interested. One of the reason could be it’s lack of “cool” appeal. No one really wants to work in the complicated world of government procurement — it’s not sexy enough.

GovLoop’s own Steve Ressler moderated the “Rising Acquisition Professionals Panel” at this year’s Acquisition Excellence conference. The panel was made up of all young contracting specialists. Jeremy Pierre, Senior Contract Specialist, Department of Education. He told Steve how he got interested in procurement.

Also on the panel:

  • Alex Mavroukakis, Senior Contract Specialist, Department of Education, Co-Founder and Director, Rising Acquisition Professionals.
  • Maroulla Plangetis, Contract Specialist Fellow, Department of Homeland Security
  • Elizabeth Johnson, Contract Specialist, Department of Defense

We will have more from the Acquisition Excellence conference coming up this week on the DorobekINSIDER program.

What do you think? Are Millennials cut out for acquisition?
