Men’s NCAA Division I Ice Hockey Tournament – The Road to the Frozen Four

Great college hockey began yesterday and continues through Sunday… here’s the bracket for the tournament… the tournmanet started Friday and we have already had some great upsets… in the West Regional Semifinals, 4th seeded Miami (Ohio) took down top seeded Denver and the University of Minnesota-Duluth (UMD) defeated Princeton in overtime.

THE MADNESS CONTINUES

However, those upsets pale in comparison to what happened in the East Regional Semifinal… #4 seed Air Force STUNNED #1 Miss Again (sorry, I mean Michigan). Outragous… the Hokie Guru is glad he waited until today to make his picks on that one… that might have been the hugest upset ever in college hockey (the Hokie Guru honestly had the Wolverines in the Frozen Four and maybe the title game). Michigan was completely owned by the disciplined Air Force Falcon hockey team. Michigan is no stranger to huge upsets.

Even when the weather is cold, cold cold, Appalachian is hot, hot, hot!!

The Hokie Guru will never forget that Michigan game… anyway, Air Force is our true Cinderella this year in every sport… Michigan had zero business losing that hockey game.

Here are today’s games…

1.) In the West Regional Final, Miami (OH) takes on UMD. The game is in Minneapolis, MN, which is essentially a home game for UMD. The Hokie Guru will take UMD for the win (because they have a hot goaltender), but is rooting for Govloop’s Redhawks. UMD gets the first Frozen Four spot.

2.) In the East Regional Final, the Vermont takes on Cinderella, Air Force. The glass slipper will not fit; Vermont wins. Vermont gets the second Frozen Four spot.

3.) In the Midwest Regional Semifinals, we have some fun matchups. First, #2 ranked (poll here) and #1 seeded Notre Dame takes on Bemidji State University (MN). Boy, the Hokie Guru is cheering for Bemiji, but doesn’t think we will see two Cinderellas win the same weekend (and you can beat that Notre Dame’s coach is telling his team all about that Michigan game)… it whould be fun, though. Notre Dame wins. Second, Northeastern takes on Cornell… the Hokie Guru must admit… he knows very little about either team and when in doubt, he takes the team from Boston. Northeastern wins. This sets up a Midwest Regional final matchup between Notre Dame and Northeastern. Notre Dame wins and gets the third Frozen Four spot.

4.) In the Northeast Regional Semifinals, we have some classic matchups. #1 ranked and the tournament’s top overall seed in Boston University taking on The Ohio State University, the last team in the tournament. The Hokie Guru is putting this out there now… these games are being held in Mancester, NH, which is essentially a suburb of Boston… this should help Boston University. Boston University will beat Ohio State. In the second game, the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux, the hottest team in all of college hockey, is taking on the University of New Hampshire… for our intents and purposes, this is a home game for New Hampshire… a hostile environment for the Sioux (the jekyll and hyde of college hockey… yes, they are hot, but do they show up knowing the importance of this game?). New Hampshire wins. This sets up a contest between Boston University and New Hampshire; the Hokie Guru has Boston University winning (and getting the 4th Frozen Four spot).

Future blog posts… Men’s NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Final Four live blog… Frozen Four picks… and spring football… all with the Hokie Guru.

Have a great day!!

Thanks for the update on GovLoop’s Basketball brackets… how about some comments on my college hockey related post? 🙂 Or were you not happy that I picked Miami to go home early? 🙂 I also picked my North Dakota team to go home early.
