ITS sector shows strength

A new report from the Intelligent Transportation Society of America confirmed that cities and states are coping with budget reductions by using technology solutions to maximize existing transportation capacity. “This report validates what we have known for some time – that the transportation technology industry is healthy, growing, and supports high-paying jobs across the country, even in tough economic times,” said ITS America president and CEO Scott Belcher in a statement. “This is a sector where the US is poised to lead the way in innovation.” Among the report’s findings (based on 2009):

  • ITS is a $48 billion industry in the US with 180,000 end-use private sector jobs and 445,000 total jobs in the value chain.
  • California is home to more than 54,000 ITS jobs — the most in the US.
  • ITS companies reported an average salary of $75,000.

The research was sponsored by the US Department of Transportation Research and Innovative Technology Administration and conducted by IHS Global Insight. Download the report [pdf].
