Special Operations Command Seeks Dust-Proof Helicopter Vision

The Technical Applications Contracting Office at Fort Eustis, Va. has selected three defense contractors to develop synthetic-vision helicopter avionics that work in dusty conditions for Special Operations Command, Military Aerospace & Electronics reported Thursday.

John Keller writes SOCOM officials have allocated between three and five years of technology demonstrations for the Degraded Visual Environment Pilotage System program prior to a contract award.

SOCOM wants the technology to help chopper pilots land rotary-wing aircraft despite brownout conditions and degraded visual environments.

Rockwell Collins, Boeing and Sierra Nevada will develop the technology.
