Update on the 6 March 2012 Government Big Data Forum

With this post I provide an update on the 6 March 2012 Government Big Data Forum, sponsored by Carahsoft.

This is the second annual gathering of the government and industry Big Data community. We have planned a day of interaction between and among members of government agencies, solution integrators and technology vendors. Speakers include thought leaders in Big Data from the CIA, DoD, DoT and some of Silicon Valley’s greatest Big Data capability providers. We plan several keynote discussions, two tech showcase reviews of corporate capabilities, an expo floor, and an interactive panel of experienced Big Data professionals. This panel will dive deep into the emerging discipline of the Data Scientist and examine issues such as optimal career paths for the data scientist and the role of an organization’s Chief Data Officer.

Last year, analyzing Big Data sets was an emerging issue for many government agencies. Now that these organizations have had a chance to field Big Data solutions for over a year, the needs of government are shifting as new lessons are identifying new opportunities. This year’s forum has been built with those areas of focus in mind as we bring together several government and industry thought leaders including our morning keynote, Gus Hunt, CTO, CIA, who will discuss perspectives on Big Data mission needs; Dr. Amr Awadalla, Founder and CTO, Cloudera, who will update us on Big Data trends; and John Marshall, CTO, Intelligence Directorate, Joint Staff/J2, who will go more in depth on the emerging role of the Chief Data Officer and Data Scientist. Tim Schmidt of Department of Transportation will provide insights into emerging DoT ground transportation data issues.

We will also present a Big Data solutions showcase featuring succinct presentations from pioneers of the Big Data movement in industry, including startups Cloudera, Datameer, and Digital Reasoning and established providers like VMware, SAP, Thetus, and MarkLogic.
