Belkin Smart Card Reader Achieves FIPS 201 Certification

Federal Security Standard Assures Iron-clad Security and Reliability for Government Organizations

Belkin Enterprise, a trusted leader of customer-driven computing solutions for office, IT infrastructure and mobile environments, today announced that its USB Smart Card and Common Access Card (CAC) Reader is now FIPS 201 (Federal Information Processing Standard Publication 201) compliant and is listed on the GSA FIPS 201 Products List (APL). Belkin’s USB Smart Card and CAC Reader is designed specifically for today’s demanding government applications. Achieving FIPS 201 compliance demonstrates Belkin’s commitment to developing purpose-built products that meet the particular requirements of customers such as government agencies for whom security is a primary concern.

FIPS 201 is a United States federal government standard that specifies Personal Identity Verification (PIV) requirements for federal employees and contractors to achieve appropriate security assurance for multiple applications. The standard was designed to ensure that the identity of individuals who seek physical access to federally controlled government facilities, and electronic access to government information systems, is efficiently verified.

Offering the broadest range of smart card compatibility, including Class A, B, C (5v, 3v and 1.8v), the Belkin Smart Card Reader features a compact, tamper-resistant design for easy one-handed card insertion that is ideal for government data security use.

Designed to support smart cards meeting ISO7816 standards, which include CAC and PIV, the new Belkin Smart Card Reader has been built from the ground up to assure high security for government applications. Its unibody enclosure works to eliminate entry points and prevents physical electronic tampering. All firmware is in ROM (read only memory) to assure no risk of alteration.

“We built our new smart card reader from the ground up, specifically to meet strict government security requirements,” said Carlos Del Toro, senior global product manager for Belkin. “Achieving FIPS 201 compliance is a tribute to our development approach and the unique features that deliver iron-clad security and reliability to our government customers.”

Belkin delivers the necessary components for workstation security, as well as every essential accessory and peripheral device to provide a complete, efficient, productive workstation that meets the demands of government use. For more information visit: Belkin Government.
