GovLoop Online Chat: How To Leverage Big Data to Improve Services

GovLoop, the social knowledge network for public sector professionals, is one of the most virtuous members of the Gov2.0 ecosystem. Their support of the community demonstrates, on a daily basis, their dedication to a simple mission: They want to connect government to improve government.

If you share the GovLoop goals and can contribute to this mission please join us there (when you do, be sure to friend GovLoop’s founder Steve Ressler, as well as my friends Andrew Krzmarzick and Chris Dorobek).

As a technologist I appreciate being able to leverage GovLoop to learn and to connect with others. We provide most of our writings to GovLoop and enjoy the feedback from professionals there. And the writings from others in sections of GovLoop on technology and on key government mission areas are a tremendous help to me personally and professionally.

Since we write extensively on Big Data and things like Apache Hadoop here, I’ve been asked to participate with the GovLoop community in an online chat on that topic. This discussion will be 31 May at 2pm Eastern. I hope you will join us and I hope you will come prepared to ask the hard questions. My personal intent in the discussion is to give participants succinct ways to talk about Big Data, but I have another objective. I hope to leave with a long list of new friends and associates who can continue the dialog on this topic. I also believe the session will help clarify more about what we should be writing on here regarding this great topic.

Here is more about the event:

Join GovLoop and Bob Gourley, editor of CTOvision.com and founder of Crucial Point LLC, for an interactive online chat where we will discuss the latest trends of Big Data in government and more importantly address specific questions and roadblocks facing the GovLoop government community.

Government has always collected large volumes of data. The GovLoop Chat brought to you by the GovLoop Technology Council will explore how agencies can best leverage Big Data to improve services provided to constituents. With the boom in new technologies, agencies are collecting more data than ever before. Government agencies are now focused on understanding how they can clearly connect the dots within their agency to leverage Big Data. By sharing data across the agency, agencies will be able to work towards solving complex problems and drive decisions based on data. Although Big Data holds great promise for agencies to improve services they provide to citizens, Big Data also presents numerous challenges to agency. The GovLoop Chat will address the common challenges of Big Data and provide tactical solutions on how to best overcome common pitfalls and roadblocks. Specifically, the chat will focus on:

  • Business Case for Big Data
  • Common Roadblocks and Barriers
  • Expert Insights on how to best leverage big data at your agency
  • The future of Big Data and how it will shape the public sector
