Is it Star Wars? No it’s Govloop’s Bureaucrat on Sports Covering the Frozen Four… plus, who’s Tweeting Away!!

You can still rock in America with the Hokie Guru!!

Here here they come!!

Yep, it’s the Frozen Four, the NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Semifinals and Finals… right here in Washington, DC at the Phone Booth (Verizon Center) … Star Wars style… our four contestants… the Bemidji State University Beavers (R2D2), Miami University (Luke Skywalker), University of Vermont (Han Solo), and Boston University (Darth Vader).

The Star Wars Fighters

1.) The Bemidji State University Beavers – Bemidji State University (R2D2), in Bemidji, Minnesota (near the Hokie Guru’s family lake cabin) and home of the great Paul Bunyan statue, is on the north shore of Lake Bemidji. In order to get to the Frozen Four here in Washington, DC, the Beavers had to beat Notre Dame and Cornell… and they got it done. Everyone loves R2D2 (e.g. Cinderella)… this is Bemidji’s first appearance in the Frozen Four.

2.) The Miami University (OH) Redhawks – Honestly, the Hokie Guru knows very little about Govloops, alma mater, Miami University, other than no one expected Miami to make the tournament. Miami finished third in their conference and it’s entire starting roster is from the United States, which is quite frankly, kind of cool… most college hockey teams have at least one or two starters from Canada. Miami’s path to Frozen Four included victories over Denver and University of Minnesota Duluth. This is Miami’s first trip to the Frozen Four. Everyone loves a good American fighter and we have one here in Luke Skywalker.

3.) University of Vermont Catamounts – Vermont, back with a vengeance, beat Air Force and Yale to get to Washington. This is Vermont’s second trip to the NCAA’s Frozen Four.

4.) Boston University Terriers – Ah yes, the #1 overall seed in the tournament… and the #1 team in the nation all year long… with the Hobey Baker winner… Darth Vader himself, Boston University. The Terriers beat Ohio State and New Hampshire to get a spot at the Phone Booth.

In Thursday’s first semifinal game, Miami took down Bemidji (and yes, Govloop, the Hokie Guru was there in person with his father… rooting for the Beavers… the whole Phone Booth was rooting for the Beavers… how can you not root for R2D2?)… Miami was the better team… and a great fighter!! In the second semifinal, Boston University took down Vermont in a thriller.

More than wins, though… the Frozen Four is about loyalty to college hockey (the Hokie Guru’s North Dakota Fighting Sioux did not make it to Washington, DC, but he still loves college hockey).

In Saturday’s action, the Hokie Guru will be rooting for Luke Skywalker (Miami) to take down dear old dad, Darth Vader (Boston), but the Hokie Guru is picking Boston University to win the Frozen Four.

Who is Tweeting?

Who’s on Twitter on the college coaching world? Many coaches, including Pete Carroll, Steve Sarkisian, and Mark Richt to name a few… absolutely cool.

Happy Easter from the Hokie Guru!!

GovLoop

Go Miami (OH). Used to be a tradition to go to hockey games on Friday. I think they were at like 7. So it was a good warmup for the night. The Goggin was sweet – small, loud, crowded. They have since built an awesome new arena which has helped them a lot with recruiting. I mean who wouldn’t want to go to Miami (OH) – best public education in OH, beautiful campus, and alumni like GovLoop, PJ O’Rourke, Big Ben, Wally-Time…and it always wins awards for the best looking campus…

Govloop, the Redhawk homer.

That’s okay… the Hokie Guru is a homer for Virginia Tech… surprise, right?
