Strategic leadership is a term we often hear tossed around in business meetings and leadership seminars. But what does it really mean when someone tells you to be more strategic? It’s one of those buzzwords that sounds impressive but can leave you scratching your head if you don’t know the ins and outs. Let’s break it down and have a little fun along the way!

At its core, strategic leadership is about seeing the big picture. It’s not just about managing daily tasks or solving immediate problems. Instead, it’s about thinking ahead, setting long-term goals, and determining the best path to achieve them. Strategic leaders are reflective and thoughtful, working to understand the impact beyond their immediate work unit. Think of it as planning for a trip. Your only role might be to ensure the gas tank is full, but you consider the health of the whole car, including oil, tires, inspection, time and the trip’s distance. Now think of your agency: When making key decisions, are there policy requirements, legal advice, manpower or budget implications, or any industry best practices? Another analogy is that it’s like playing chess rather than checkers — anticipating moves and understanding how each decision impacts the whole board.
So, how can you become more strategic? It starts with asking the right questions: What are we trying to solve? Who are the key stakeholders? What resources do we need? What obstacles might stand in our way? Do we need to consider technology? How do we sequence planning efforts? How and when should we communicate strategically? By thinking critically about these questions, you can develop a plan that’s not just about putting out fires but about creating strategic insights and solutions for decision-makers. Steer clear of phrases like “we tried this in the past” or “this will never work.” Gather the facts and provide viable solutions. Remember, being strategic isn’t about being rigid — it’s about being thoughtful and proactive.
In the end, embracing strategic leadership can transform how you approach challenges and unlock incredible opportunities. It’s a game-changer that enables you to lead with purpose and clarity. So, if you hear someone say, “You need to be more strategic,” you’ll know exactly what they mean and your immediate next steps. I’m pretty sure that with this information, you’ll get ahead of the game, and you may hear, “Thank you for being a strategic leader.”
