Today I answer some of my readers questions, including how to ‘manage up’ without ‘kissing up’.
Q: How do you “manage up” without being a “yes-man” or a sycophant? Seems like a fine line to walk.
A: It is easy to confuse managing up with “kissing up,” but I can assure you that the two are quite different. A yes-man/woman is essentially trying to curry favor with the boss by doing whatever he or she wants, right?
Someone who is successfully managing up, however, works to consistently make the boss’s job easier – not by agreeing all of the time, but by consistently adding value to the team.
