The Joys (and Pains?) of Supervising Your Once-Upon-a-Time Peers

Transitioning from peer-to-peer to peer-to-supervisor is similar to stepping onto a rollercoaster ride without a safety belt — exhilarating, anxiety-inducing, and bound to make your stomach do somersaults. One moment, you’re swapping recipes over a cup of coffee, and the next, you’re tasked with delegating assignments and making tough decisions. Here are some practical insights to help navigate this thrilling, yet sometimes challenging journey:

Embracing Change: Transitioning from peer to supervisor requires a shift in mindset. Suddenly, you’re not just responsible for your own tasks, but also for guiding and supporting your former colleagues. It’s a bit like upgrading from a bicycle to a motorcycle — exhilarating, but also a little intimidating. Remember: growth often comes with stepping outside your comfort zone.

Establishing Authority & Being Empathetic: As you assume your new role, it’s important to strike a balance between assertiveness and empathy. Remember, you’re not just a supervisor; you’re also a mentor and a coach. As the supervisor, you are setting the course, but also navigating challenges with compassion and understanding. Building trust and rapport with your team is essential for fostering a productive work environment.

Celebrating Milestones: During the whirlwind of transition, don’t forget to celebrate milestones — both big and small. Whether it’s hitting a project deadline or fostering a culture of partnership, it’s important to take a moment to acknowledge the efforts of your team. Celebrating the wins can show your team how much you value their inputs and contributions to the greater good.

Transitioning from peer-to-peer to peer-to-supervisor is a thrilling adventure filled with twists, turns, and a fair share of apprehension and adrenaline rushes. Embrace the change, lead with empathy, and remember to celebrate the victories along the way. With a bit of courage and a bunch of determination, you’ll navigate this transition with flying colors — and maybe even enjoy the ride.
