Today is Military Spouse Appreciation Day (May 8, 2009)

Wishing anyone and everyone in GovLoop who has a married family member in the military …. or who know of a military spouse in need of a hug or support, today is their day. Clearly, these families need our support every day but it’s nice there is one day of the year where they are specifically thought of in memory for all their struggle, commitment and sacrifice.

To this end, I have partnered with ClearedJobs.Net (@ClearedJobsNet on Twitter) to showcase tributes and dedications to any and all military spouses we can find on Twitter, Facebook and on blogs.

Here’s what we have so far (I am posting all day, all night … and all through Mother’s Day weekend):

We started posting the special tributes and recognition as an outreach effort to let these military spouses know how much they are appreciated.

In working this project since late last night, I have to openly share with you that it’s been kind of heartbreaking to read some of the twitter feeds I’m coming across. I’ve come across husbands and wives tweeting how much they miss each other (very endearing some of their twitter exchanges). One woman tweeted how absolutely heartbroken she was to just have missed her husband’s call (it is hard to call from his location). Another woman asked all her friends on twitter to please support her during these next 7-8 months as her husband was leaving for Iraq and she was overwhelmed with sadness and fear. And still another military spouse was on a tirade on her twitter account because she only had 5 minutes speaking to her husband before the call cut off and that was it until who knows when.

So please, folks, if you can think of anyone for me to plug or do a shout out to ??? Or help me to spread the word about this? I am doing this all weekend long and hope to have about 200 folks minimum; presently I am almost at 40 plugs at http://www.twitpic.com/photos/milspouseday

If you can help me to get the word out there, or have a special request or dedication to someone, I’d love to know it. I am online all weekend. Hit me up at @milspouseday and be sure to use twitter hash tag #militaryspouse or #milspouse

Thank you kindly!!!
Mayra
