Public speaking can feel daunting — especially as a supervisor who regularly manages complex information, high expectations, personnel needs and overloaded schedules. Do you know how to organize your thoughts to make an impactful presentation, while also handling nerves and unexpected questions?
In a recent virtual discussion with Debbie Finklestein, a communications consultant, we examined ways leaders can build confidence and communicate with clarity. Below is a snapshot of the key points of the Supervisors Community of Practice discussion, as well as the session recording to learn from and share with your colleagues.
- Public speaking confidence comes from preparation, not perfection. Many people have a fear of public speaking because of past negative experiences, fear of failure, or imposter syndrome. However, Finkelstein emphasized that confidence is built through intentional preparation, including scheduling time to write and rehearse presentations. She also encouraged attendees to acknowledge nervousness rather than fight it, and to channel that energy into a stronger delivery.
- Focus on one core message and repeat it.When communicating complex information, supervisors should identify the single most important takeaway by asking themselves, “If the audience remembers one thing, what do I want it to be?” She also recommended reinforcing that message multiple times throughout a presentation and pairing it with a clear call to action.
- Effective leaders build trust through honest communication. Unexpected questions, difficult discussions, and moments of uncertainty are inevitable. Rather than trying to have every answer, Finkelstein said to be transparent when they don’t know something and commit to a specific follow-up timeline. She also stressed the importance of acknowledging employees’ concerns, staying focused on meeting objectives, and communicating as part of the team rather than distancing oneself from leadership decisions.
