The Impact of a Multi-Generational Workplace

2022 saw one of the highest rates of federal retirement, with 114,000 employees leaving their agencies and calling attention to growing gaps in the workforce.

Mika Cross, Workplace Transformation Strategist, recently sat down with Jeffrey Vargas, President and CEO of Generationology, LLC, to discuss how agencies need to compensate for exiting employees in this edition of “Management Minutes with Mika.”

“There’s a real impact on Gen Z and agencies need to take this issue seriously,” said Vargas. “When people start leaving, there’s more work to do for those who are left, and it leads to an increase in burnout and stress.”

Vargas noted that Gen Z is looking for an environment where they can “learn and grow” and if they are instead faced with doing more work with no relief in sight, they are likely to look for other employment.

How can government organizations make Gen Z employees feel more valued?

Vargas suggested that since many agencies are asking employees to return to the workplace, they really need to take advantage of having people present.

“You need to address the elephant in the room, listen to employees and truly talk about the impact they are feeling,” he said.
