Seriously..Can we?
There’s certainly no shortage of global issues these days. In every news story I hear or read, one of the things that strikes me is the lack of communication between the parties.
Issues between two or more parties will always exist. We have different ways of looking at the same issue, different ways of processing information and differences in how we draw conclusions. We certainly have differences in the conclusions we draw.
And it’s not just in large, headline worthy ways. Friends, partners and spouses all have differences. The work world is no exception.
Because we typically spend the majority of our waking hours at work, it is especially important that the art of communication be a constant focus for growth. As a leader, the job of clear and consistent communications begins with you.
By this point in our lives, we understand that communication is so much more than simply speaking to someone. Or even asking if they’ve understood. Real communication happens when I understand exactly what you meant. I can hear your content, but do I hear your context?
The old technique of having the listener repeat what they heard you say, is not only cumbersome, but doesn’t get to the heart of the real issue: what is the true intent of the words.
When you speak, do your employees simply listen, or do they really HEAR what you’re saying. Do they understand the thoughts, beliefs, feelings and depth of conviction of your words? Can they faithfully replicate your intentions as they perform their jobs?
Establishing open dialogues and an environment where questions are welcomed is a first step in ensuring that the spirit of the message, not just your words, are truly heard.
If we all commit to becoming better communicators, we may not solve the world’s problems, but it’s a pretty good start…and in the meantime, our little corner of the world is sure to be a better place.
