2010-2011 College Football Bowl Pick’em (and Preview) Only on Govloop from your bureaucrat on sports, the Hokie Guru

Happy Holidays

It’s the time of year again. Hope all you folks had a Happy Thanksgiving. The holiday season is right around the corner. Please remember to donate to the Combined Federal Campaign. You can found out more about the mission of the campaign here.

Play Govloop’s Bowl Pick’em

Here’s the deal… you know the drill… over at Yahoo, they have this thing called College Football Bowl Pick’em. We’ve set up our own little bracket here at Govloop. It’s called Govloop Rockstars. The group ID# is 13813 and your password is: gohokies20. We’ve set up the pick’em event as one that is based on confidence points. Have fun… play the game with us.

Bowl Preview

LOTS of bowl games. Some games are, ahem, trash, others are absolute diamonds in the rough, and then we have the Bowl Championship Series games. The Hokie Guru will give you a six-pack out there that he’s interested (talking in the third person, like The Jimmy) and will make picks about 10 days later in another blog post:

1.) #2 Oregon vs. #1 Auburn (National Title) – January 10, 2011 – 8 PM EST ESPN – No question, the best Bowl Championship Series (BCS) game (and the best bowl game period). Two high-octane offenses. One in Auburn, featuring the best college football player in the game in Cam Newton (who is essentially Tim Tebow, but a better passer and runner) and Oregon, who the Hokie Guru compares to a fast break college football offense… one minute, it’s 0-0, and at the beginning of the 2nd quarter, the Ducks have 28 points on the board. It is really incredible watching Chip Kelley coach that Ducks offense. One of the game’s real innovators. Can’t wait to see this game.

2.) #3 TCU vs. #4 Wisconsin (Rose Bowl) – January 1, 2011 – 4:30 PM EST ESPN – A contrast in styles. The Badgers POWER run game (featuring outstanding running back, John Clay) against the stifling defense of the Horned Frogs. We’ll find out whether TCU can play with the big boys in a hurry.

3.) #5 Stanford vs. #12 Virginia Tech (Orange Bowl) – January 3, 2011 – 8 PM EST ESPN – Stanford just might be the best team in BCS football. Cardinal head coach, Jim Harbaugh, has done an outstanding job (and might be entering his last year in the college ranks). No one circles the wagons like Frank Beamer and his coaching staff. Starting out 0-2, the Hokies won 11 times in a row going undefeated in Atlantic Coast Conference football (it’s been more than a decade since that has happened… hard to go undefeated in any conference). The match up the Hokie Guru is looking here is Standford’s Andrew Luck (QB) vs. the Hokies CBs, Rashad Carmichael and Jayron Hosley.

4.) #6 Ohio State vs. #8 Arkansas (Sugar Bowl) – January 4, 2011 – 8 PM EST ESPN – Why watch this game? Two reasons. First, the Hokie Guru would love to see the Buckeyes, you know, beat an SEC team in a BCS bowl game when it, ahem, counts. Second, will this be Bobby Petrino’s last game at Arkansas? Maybe.

5.) #7 Michigan State vs. #15 Alabama (Capital One Bowl) – January 1, 2011 – 1:00 PM EST ESPN – Michigan probably has the biggest beef of any team not in the BCS Bowls. It might be the best one loss team not in a BCS Bowl (shut down the Badger running game), although Boise State might argue that point (UCONN you should be ASHAMED lol). Sparty only lost one game this year… to Iowa. Mark Dantonio deserves coach of the year consideration. Alabama bwahahaha, my how the mighty have fallen. Seriously, though, this is the best non-BCS bowl game.

6.) #23 Florida State vs. #19 South Carolina (Chick-Fil-A Bowl) – December 31, 2010 – 7:30 PM EST ESPN – A matchup between two teams on the rise. In one corner, you have the Seminoles, a team that will most likely be fighting for Atlantic Coast Conference supremacy over the next half decade vs. Virginia Tech. In the other corner, it’s the old ball coach, Steve Spurrier. The Hokie Guru has been around for, ahem a while lol and remembers when Spurrier (once the coach at Florida) went toe-to-toe with Florida State, so he’s seen him go full circle. In any even, this is the 2nd best non-BCS game

If the Hokie Guru has time during the holiday break, he’ll do a brief preview of the upcoming men’s basketball season.

Take care, folks… remember, play our college football bowl pick’em game here only on Govloop. What games are you looking forward to? Have a great week 🙂
