The VA San Diego Healthcare System (VASDHS) provides a comprehensive array of healthcare services for approximately 60,000 veterans in San Diego and Imperial Counties with an operating budget of over $357 million and over 2,400 employees and more than 5,000 active staff, volunteers, trainees or contractors. VASDHS consists of one of VHA’s most complex tertiary care medical centers located in La Jolla, five community clinics located in Mission Valley, Escondido, Chula Vista, Vista, and Imperial Valley, in addition to a vocational enrichment/education center also located in Mission Valley. It has 242 hospital and had more than 618,807 outpatient visits in FY 2008. The VA San Diego Healthcare System is a part of Network 22, which includes facilities in Los Angeles, Long Beach, Loma Linda, and Las Vegas.

VA San Diego Healthcare System is classified as a Clinical Referral Level III and a VHA complexity level 1a facility. It is a teaching hospital providing a full range of patient care services with state-of-the-art technology, as well as extensive educational affiliations, and one the country’s largest research programs. Comprehensive health care is provided through primary care, tertiary care, and long-term care in the areas of medicine, surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, oncology, dentistry, geriatrics, and extended care.
