State of the Net Conference. Does Government “Get It?”

The OGTV family is spending its morning at the State of the Net Conference held at the Hyatt Regency on Capitol Hill. The event is presented by the Advisory Committee to the Congressional Internet Caucus.

This morning, our Director of New Media, a political and government social media strategist, Stephanie Noble had a quick breakfast chat with a member of the Department of Homeland Security. Though not a speaker at the event, he was interested to see what topics would be presented. He expressed being impressed with the internet’s ability to play a role in disaster response. Taking a cue from University emergency response systems, he felt progress was constantly being made. Optimism is good to see in government.

While the agenda for the conference reads relevant, one has to wonder, do the speakers themselves “get it?” This is government after all. The conference is titled the State of the Net. It begs the question, “What is the State of the Net?” The answer? Constantly changing. Government, not known for being nimble and quick to adapt, faces a challenge is understanding and effectively harnessing the state of the net.
