Daniel Bevarly started the topic Nominate a S/L Open Govt "Hero" in the forum Miscellaneous 5 years, 10 months ago
Know of someone you believe qualifies as a hero for open, transparent government at the state and/or local levels? The National Freedom of Information Coalition (NFOIC) is accepting applications to add the 2015 recipient to its Open Government “Hall of Fame” to be announced at its annual FOI Summit in Denver, October 9-10. Daniel Bevarly started the topic What’s the greatest challenge for successful online governance? in the forum Leadership, Management, Supervision 7 years ago
Here’s mine.
I’ve been researching the discussions in the early days of “Gov 2.0” (back when I joined Gov Loop when it had less than 2K members.) Many of the presentations and interviews with some of the pioneers talked about the potential of online government and online governance.
Of course, these discussions had to account for the knowledge…[Read more] -
Daniel Bevarly started the topic How far away are we from Regional Government? in the forum Miscellaneous 7 years, 9 months ago
Social Networks connect people to form new communities of interest. These communities are both virtual and real as they exist online and face-to-face. The potential is there for local governments to do the same and connect with their geographic counterparts to form regional governments and/or to govern regionally. Legal and political challenges…[Read more]

Daniel Bevarly replied to the topic Policy For Sharing Photos? in the forum Communications, Citizen Engagement, Customer Service 7 years, 10 months ago
Thomas – I read a recent article posted on American City & County mag’s web site about cities that are using photo archives for civic engagement. Perhaps they have policies related to sharing photos as well. The link is in my tweet:

Daniel Bevarly replied to the topic Is civic involvement more than politicial involvement? Take a quick poll. in the forum Communications, Citizen Engagement, Customer Service 7 years, 10 months ago
“…completely different set of motivations and skills required for the two different activities.”
Henry, I’d love to hear more of your thinking on this statement. Could you describe a situation or give an example? Thanks. -

Henry – Thanks for joining in. Yes. The poll is pretty “fresh” I’d like to hear from more folks. Let me clarify that the items on the poll are to represent civic involvement (or not, based on your opinion), not political involvement –while some clearly are.
My premise with the post is that Pew (and others) appear to use political involvement and…[Read more] -

Thanks for the comment Mark. I like how you italicized ought. Public participation, formal or informal, is about volunteering; whether it be your time, your ideas or your person. Good analogy as well.

I like Pew Charitable Trusts. I like the Pew Research Center and the Pew Internet and American Life and Pew American Cities projects. These guys know their stuff and provide a valuable service to advancing social, economic and political understanding and practices. I particularly enjoy reading the results of their research on these…[Read more]

Daniel Bevarly started the topic “We, the people…” How does Gov 2.0 respond to Inauguration Speech? in the forum Leadership, Management, Supervision 8 years, 2 months ago
President Obama’s inaugural speech addressed the challenges we face as a nation of collective individuals. Among the content from the speech was this statement: “We understand that outworn programs are inadequate to the needs of our time. We must harness new ideas and technology to remake our government, revamp our tax code, reform our schools,…[Read more]

I would not be as concerned with the site being externally hosted as I would be with the structure of that site to mirror or replicate traditional public communication and data transmit or exchange. Government should be working with any third party provider of its online relations with the public to ensure such structure, processes and policies…[Read more]

Daniel Bevarly replied to the topic Where do you get your local news? in the forum Communications, Citizen Engagement, Customer Service 8 years, 8 months ago
Emily – Pew found that newspapers are still the primary information source for adult Americans. This may provide additional insight into your question. I pulled this content from a blog post of mine: “Why it’s important to know how people learn about their community.”

Daniel Bevarly replied to the topic Should the communications department remain in the shadows? in the forum Communications, Citizen Engagement, Customer Service 8 years, 8 months ago
Deb – I overlooked that crucial challenge –self preservation. Indeed your department should be lobbying hard directly and indirectly among the elected officials who mush appreciate your work and the agency directors who should be advocates for your department based on your service to them and their agencies.

Daniel Bevarly replied to the topic Should the communications department remain in the shadows? in the forum Communications, Citizen Engagement, Customer Service 8 years, 8 months ago
As a former communications director for a municipal government, I believe I may have some experience to contribute to your questions?
You ask a variety of questions related to processes and policy. First, I never subscribed to the communications department officially as a “public relations” department. While this is indeed an accurate description…[Read more] -

In Gov 2.0, open government or open data, any product or service acquired to build, use or promote these must address Structure, Standards and Procedures. If not, then the acquisition is a waste of governments’ and the public’s time, energy and money. Gov 2.0 will not scale, and it is why online governance in a democratic republic is taking so…[Read more]

Daniel Bevarly started the topic Any government agencies (executive or legislative) that have polled or surveyed their citizens about their preferences and expectations for “Gov2.0” solutions? in the forum Communications, Citizen Engagement, Customer Service 8 years, 8 months ago
The creeping pace of implementing Gov 2.0 solutions has been coming from internal challenges (legal, political and traditional) and external ones (primarily vendor-driven). Democracy is a grass-roots initiative.
I am seeking examples of local, state or federal governments that have connected with their constituents to hear from them about their…[Read more] -
Daniel Bevarly replied to the topic What is the citizen’s responsibility? in the forum Communications, Citizen Engagement, Customer Service 8 years, 8 months ago
The quality of government reflects the quality of the citizenry and vice versa. If there is a well-connected and engaged relationship between citizens and their government, then the civic infrastructure will be sound and representative democracy will truly be represented. However, when 10-20% of the public speak for the majority, then that…[Read more]
